Connectivity is of the utmost importance for the overall growth of the trade, people and region as well as for the country. Historically, Kings used to protect their trade route as it was the source of their revenue. Same way the dedicated freight corridor is a key infrastructure for the rapid growth of a country's economy.
Despite having the longest road network across the world, traditionally the condition of road infrastructure in India has been poor and below par at best.
However, there is a significant improvement in this front due to the emphasis on infrastructure development in recent years, which is evident from the statistical data on Indian Expressways road network.
Before 2017 the total length of India’s expressway was 200 km. As of 2022 the length has become more than 2500 km. Including the under-construction development of expressways under the phase I of BHARATMALA initiative, by 2025 the total length of expressway would become more than 12000 km.

Dubbed as the greenfield Konkan expressway and planned on the lines of Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samrudhi Marg, Coastal Highway that will connect Nagpur with Mumbai, the MSRDC has drafted an ambitious Rs 70,000 crore plan for construction of a 400 km expressway. This expressway would reduce the travel time between Mumbai to Sindhudurg from the current 7 hours to 3-4 hours. This road will be the same as the California state coastal road, where travellers can stop and enjoy the scenic view of the sea.
Maharashtra CM Shinde, who is expected to keep with him urban development and MSRDC, has already told the administration that he will personally review the progress of various infrastructure projects including Konkan coastal road.
